Acne Q & A

What is acne?

When the pores in your skin become clogged with oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells, your skin develops a condition called acne. Acne can manifest as red pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, or a combination of the three. The skin on your face, back, chest, and shoulders are the most vulnerable to developing acne, but it can appear elsewhere on your body.

While some pimples appear on the surface of your skin and don’t come with any other symptoms, others can be deep (nodules and lesions) or tender to the touch.

Why do I have acne as an adult?

Many patients wrongly assume that they’ll stop developing acne after their teenage years since acne is most common in teenagers due to hormone changes. If you continue to break out as an adult, there are several possible reasons. These include:

  • Stress
  • Hormone changes (e.g., during pregnancy)
  • Some medications (e.g., corticosteroids and lithium)
  • A carbohydrate-rich diet

There are some myths as to what causes acne, like eating greasy foods or having poor hygiene. If you have other suspicions about what’s causing your acne, your doctor can help you determine the true factors and make necessary changes.

What are my treatment options?

For severe cases of acne that don’t seem to go away with at-home care, Sugar Land Medical & Aesthetics offers two highly effective cutting-edge treatments.

Intense pulsed light (IPL)

Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment for acne uses a machine that emits short pulses of intense light to control pigment cells. After applying a protective gel to the area, your doctor administers the treatment for approximately 15 minutes. You’ll likely need several sessions in order to see results. In addition to treating acne, IPL  reduces the appearance of acne scars from previous breakouts, sun damage, and other skin discoloration.

Laser therapy

Like IPL treatment, laser therapy works to reduce intense acne breakouts and remove the remaining scars and pigmentation. During the treatment, your doctor sets the laser device to target and heat a certain substance in your skin, eliminating the blemishes that it causes. This process is known as photothermolysis.

If your acne isn’t going away with over-the-counter medications and other home care, it may be time to look into a medical treatment such as IPL or laser therapy. To learn more, call or schedule an appointment online at Sugar Land Medical & Aesthetics in Sugar Land, Texas, today.
